Yesterday I finished a large String Quilt and it is now ready to be taken to New Zealand in January.
It is a gift for our very special friend Liz who has a special birthday coming up on 15th January,
We will be in NZ to celebrate her 70th birthday at a lunch party in a nearby café overlooking the beach.
I made my first Heartstrings Quilt back in April when we were in NZ and Liz admired it so much I decided that I would make one for her birthday.
Here is the quilt I made in April
And close ups of some of the blocks:
For Liz's Quilt I decided to use a solid centre strip in each block so that when the four blocks are put together to make a whole block the solid strips form a diamond shape:
The colours are actually a lot brighter than they appear in these photos. Taking photos indoors on a dreary December afternoon in the UK doesn't work very well. I hope to take better ones when we are in NZ!
Here's the finished quilt:
I am pleased with it and happy I managed to finish it before Christmas, otherwise I would have been rushing about like a mad thing before we left for NZ in the New Year.
I love making String Quilts - I am sure I will make another one next year.
This is my last quilt finish for 2015 so may I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
I love how your quilt came together with the diamonds, I'll bet she'll just love it!! --I will remember that center strip staying the same--a string thing will be on my list to do in January Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you ....hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteI like the diamond setting and love the scrappiness of it - lovely and bright.
ReplyDeleteAmazing quilt
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind comments. The blocks come together quickly and it's fun to use those scrap strings. I use Bonnie Hunter's idea of telephone book sheets for the paper backings to stabilize the blocks.
ReplyDeleteLove your string quilt. Such a colorful and cheery quilt.
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!!! I can only imagine how much work it takes...it looks great!

I LOVE string blocks. I am doing some in 6.5 inch size so to make it a full size quilt i'm going to need a LOT more.

Your quilt is beautiful, and Liz will love it, I'm sure. What a wonderful gift!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your lovely comments. I chose the name Heartstrings for the quilt I made back in April which was for a friend who was very ill with cancer and I felt this name summed up how my husband and I felt about our lovely friend. We have been attached to Liz from the first time we met so I felt this was the right name for this quilt too. However, I found out after I had named the first quilt that Heartstrings is a project that Mary Johnson of Making Scrap Quilts from Stash is involved in.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea to make sets with similar center fabrics. It's so lively, colorful and happy. Great special birthday present. Congratulations on a beautiful finish.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ann. I appreciate your kind comment.
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt with strings and so very fun to make. I like it.
ReplyDeleteLove it and what a wonderful gift. Makes me want to work on mine
ReplyDeleteString quilts are great for using up scraps, but they also make for a dramatic, pretty quilts. This one is lovely, but because it's for a special friend makes it even more special. Get a photo of her with the quilt, you'll love it, no doubt. Have a wonderful time in NZ and Happy 2016!
