Log Cabin

Would you call this a string quilt? It's not like the others but it's my "final gasp" before actually throwing a string away. Unlike most string quilts, all the logs finish the same 1/2" width. Any string 1" or larger works. I used to cut the strings to the appropriate width before sewing but now just sew them on and trim back.
Dark fabrics ranging from black to red, blue and green compose one side of these log cabin blocks. The light side ranges from white through pastels.
Log Cabin of 1/2" finished strings
I started making the blocks when my scrap bag was overflowing. Now, it's a habit. When a quick quilt is needed, these blocks are on hand. And my scrap bag is still full. Go figure.

Wow, it's lovely. are you piecing onto a foundation?

Thanks, y'all. Brenda, no foundation. They finish 5.5" wide. Originally that seemed easier to do. The last row is 6" unfinished, just the width of my ruler.

I love selvages and that supply seems to multiply no matter how many projects I make.

Gorgeous! I love your idea of working on it over time----sort of like Bonnie Hunter's leader-and-ender quilts. Great idea!

Whatever you decide to call it is up to you, but I call it awesome!

It's gorgeous!! I love your idea of not cutting the logs, but trimming back when they're sewn on. I don't even do that much. I just use all sizes of strings and end up with "liberated" log cabins.

Your log cabin is stunning! Lots of bright colors! Love it!

Carol, I'd love to see some of your liberated logs. Lately I've been wanting to loosen up and NOT trimming the logs would be a start. There's still a pile of these blocks but perhaps I'll switch over. One toe in the liberated style. ;-)

The contrast between the light logs and dark logs is brilliant!
