Pink and Teal String Quilt

I have finally finished this charity quilt that's been long in the making. I really enjoy the "string" process.

Using those Orphan String squares

I decided to use those Orphan String squares as centres for Wonky star blocks.
I trimmed the blocks down to 4.5" square and used them for the centres of the QAYG stars.
They made a finished block of 12.5" as requested by Adrienne  (On the windy side blog) for her Block Drive so she can make some quilts to give to children affected by the November Kaikoura earthquake.

I made similar QAYG blocks for Alison's Soy Amado Project back in 2014 and was very pleased to see how good they looked in Alison's  finished quilt.

Annette's String Quilt

My friend Annette made this string quilt using the 'quilt as you go' method to piece it together.

This measures 45" square. I made it as a donation quilt. I quilted it on my Janome.

Round Lake is Rectangular

I love to reuse fabric found in clothing. 

There is really something mystical about it.

This little quilt has found its way into our old camper. Its a rough style of camper that is mostly a "Man Cave on wheels."

This quilt is my way of putting our family in the camper with him. This quilt was formed from intuition. I was a young Mom with two toddlers of my own and I provided paid childcare for other mothers who worked outside the home.

I had my sewing machine in a case ready for a complete nap time in my house.

Then I'd sew slowly and quietly on the machine while babies napped on the floor beside me. Eventually, I returned to hand stitching, it was must simpler and easier to stash away from inquiring little fingers.

The light denim in this top came from a pair of "Preggo Pants" that I made but it was a pair of overalls.

The orange corduroy came from a set of overalls that were given to one of our sons when they were just a wee one and didn't have any use.

The darker blue denim came from a pair of jeans that my husband wore out.

The green corduroy was a remnant found at a thrift store.

The rust corduroy is from another pair of pants I made after I started to get my figure back after pregnancies.

The cream colored border fabric was a new remnant fabric.

The fish appliques were the fabrics of my first ever purchase of a thing called a "Fat Quarter" and the backing was an emergency blanket from a garage sale. The sandwich was missing the batting. But the layers provided a really nice fluff and warmth to it. I did my first machine quilting on this blanket back in 1992. It was simple 'in the ditch' machine quilting that taught me that sewing a straight line inside the ditch is actually trickier that I first thought.

Strings come in many shapes and sizes.

Spiderweb Quilt UFO

I have been busy working on my Spiderweb Quilt.  Last year my Patchwork Group was making a Group quilt for one of our member's Special birthdays - you know, one of those ending in a 0!

The Spiderweb design was chosen as it's easy for different people to contribute blocks.  We decided on the colours we thought were appropriate for our Birthday Girl, exchanged strips of suitable fabrics amongst the Group and I demonstrated the block by showing each stage by making up a set of examples.

These examples came out again recently as we are now making another Spiderweb Quilt, this time in quite different colours for the youngest of our members.  She has contributed to many "Special Birthday" and :Cheering Up because you are ill" quilts and we all felt it was high time she was gifted a Group quilt too.

Now everyone has made their quilt blocks I decided to finish a quilt myself by turning my UFO blocks into a quilt. A couple of days ago I took this photo of my progress:

 

Not a very good picture I'm afraid but I hope you can see what's happening.

Lots of bright strings sewn onto a white Kona cotton background triangle. 

 

I have completed more triangles since this picture was taken but now I have run out of background triangles so I need to cut more white 10" squares.  Only problem is, I don't appear to have an exact colour match.  I have three different white fabrics, none exactly the same shade of white! So I've decided as this is a scrappy string quilt anyway I am not going to stress about colour matching white fabrics!!!  As long as I have 4 of the same white triangles in each block I hope the shade differences will get lost amongst the colours of the strips and the Perle hand quilting I intend to do on this quilt.

 

Off to cut some more strings from my 2.5" strings stash.  It always amazing how many strips you need for these String projects - hence my stash of strips!

Annette's String Quilt

This beautiful scrappy string quilt was made by Annette. Notice how she changed the center strings of each block from orange to golden yellow for the border blocks.

Magnolia Sewing Circle Makes String Quilts

At our annual Magnolia Guest Day Sewing I helped with the ‘string quilt’ project. We started this quilt last year. You can read about it HERE.

Some of the blocks ended up smaller, so we decided to make two separate quilts.

Thelma made 4 string blocks at home for the beginning of another “String quilt.” The same 4 blocks look different depending which color you turn toward the center.

   

Magnolia Sewing Circle Makes String Quilt Blocks

At our Magnolia Sewing Circle today I was in charge of this group of ladies making string blocks for a comforter top.

By the end of the day their 38 blocks made quite a show.

Christmas Diamonds

Good morning all. 
 I just wanted to stop in and show you the first string quilt I made.  Two years ago I saw a post from Diane Wilson at MQR (sorry I can't find her post to link to) showing a drawing of a quilt that she was going to make. 


  I knew right away that I had to try it so I contacted her.  There is no 'pattern' except for her drawing so I kinda drafted my own pattern in the block size I wanted to use and set about cutting strips out of these fabrics.   Plus I used a small dark brown strip to separate the two colors.   I decide to use some really old ugly fabric for the 7"x10" foundations.


Once I had half of the blocks made I started putting them on the design wall as I made the other half.  Notice that the colors had to be reversed to complete the diamond shape.  I had to keep reminding myself of this little fact as I sewed the strips.  lol
  [BTW... a lot of those lighter strips were replaced by darker strips in the final quilt].  

 I knew I only wanted to make a small snuggle quilt so once I finished the blocks I needed.... I started to design the borders.  I went to EQ and played with different ideas until I finally chose this border using this block.  When these are sewn together it continues the diamond theme. 

As you can see I made a small dark stop border to frame the center blocks...  and then   added two small borders on both sides of the border diamonds.  I wanted them to seem to float along the border and I think I've achieved that effect. 

 

Here is a picture of the finished top.  It has been quilted and snuggled under these last two Christmas's. 

I can sure see this pattern made in many different color arrangements.  And I may just do that one day.   I have a lot more foundations ready to go and a LOT more ugly fabric waiting to be used.  ;0)
