One String at a Time

Please double-click /super-size for greater fabric detail

Things have been very-extra-stressful at the office
for the last few weeks.

When that happens, I turn to my string bins.

They energize and soothe me at the same time.

The overflowing box of strings was sorted into
smaller bins grouped by color family.

We all know strings can get messy in a big hurry.

This set-up helps me keep complete chaos at bay
but still lets me work freely.

I had cut enough base blocks to make a single large quilt.

As you can see in the first photo above,
I've changed my mind and will make two less-large quilts.

The blocks will finish at 9"
meaning one quilt will be 45" x 63"
and the other will be 36" x 45"

All in good time.

Pineapple Passion

Well I am still working slowly away on my pineapple which I posted about a few weeks ago - my progress has been slow due to hand surgery, but below five more blocks pinned to my design wall, not very straight I'm afraid, hopefully get on with number six today and then sew them up, that will make two sets of six and I will do QAYG six blocks at a time, I certainly can't tackle quilting a large quilt. I hope to put this in the city Guild show in November - fingers crossed. Still not decided how large it should be !!

I am pleased that I decided to use my older fabrics in this quilt they certainly give a softer old-fashoned feel.

Free-Form Finish

This afternoon I applied the facings to the quilted wall hanging that I made at the Rayna Gillman workshop.  The workshop was based on her book Create Your Own Free-Form Quilts.    I enjoyed the workshop, enjoyed the process and will definitely make more quilts using her improv methods.

Next time I vow to be more crooked!

Improv R Us!!!

Oh boy, I just spent a weekend in an orgy of strips and strings.  Rayna Gillman taught a 2 day workshop here in Washington NC.  Here is what I made, just waiting for quilting.

Here are a couple other compositions of fellow students:

Stringing without Foundation

I made these strings without muslin foundations and found it was much easier. First sew string sets about 10 inches square. Then sew pairs of them together like potholders (90 degree rotation of the strings.) The last step cutting the potholders on both diagonals. Each new block has strings on one half perpendicular to the other half.

Watermelon strings

I made this quick string quilt using **interesting** fabrics from my guild's stash.  As soon as I get the binding stitched to the back, it will be turned in as a donation for our Comfort Quilts program.
